About
My dissertation project explores the intersection between art, media culture and subjectivity in the art and literature of Matias Faldbakken (1973).
Case Study:
The Norwegian artist and author Matias Faldbakken (aka Abo Rasul) is well known for his somewhat nihilistic description of Scandinavian repressive tolerance in the trilogy Scandinavian Misanthropy. As a visual artist he repeatedly returns to the paradoxes of the avant-garde in order to question the relation between art and society today. His artistic expression is one of negation, indifference, minimalism and anti-aestheticism, often deployed through strategies such as the readymade, postproduction and intervention.
Problem:
Unnoticed by most critics however, Faldbakken's recycling of avant-garde strategies also takes part in a probing of contemporary art's – and its recipient's – media technological surroundings. That is, his oeuvre invites a negotiation between art, media culture and subjectivity. The question is thus: How do we analyze this negotiation?
Method:
Being methodologically inspired by Mieke Bal's concept analysis, I deploy the word interface as an analytical tool, a critical concept, to answer this question. 1) Interface denotes the mode through which digital code translates into perceivable expressions in contemporary media culture (the screen being an obvious example), as such it designates the modes through which the subject engages with digital technology. 2) But interface can also mean meeting place, common surface, contact point or boundary, or mode of interaction between separate substances, entities or discourses. 3) Finally, the material surface of a work of art, or rather the point of interaction/dialogue between work and beholder, art and subject constitutes an interface. Drawing a trajectory between these different meanings of interface, I aim to describe an aesthetic of the interface in Faldbakken's art and literature: an aesthetic practice negotiating the stakes of art, subjectivity and media culture in the present.
